What to see in Senigallia
and surroundings!

Senigallia, the town where Finis Africæ is located, overlooks the Adriatic Sea, about 30 km north of Ancona. Of ancient origins, this city boasts a unique charm: the perfect mix of sea, town and hills creates a true marvel.

It is in Senigallia that you will find the famous Velvet Beach, but also a historic centre full of life and activity, the archaeological area and the Rocca Roveresca. There are many things to do and things to see in Senigallia, let us tell you which ones.

Velvet Beach

Cycling without being in a hurry is the best way to reach the beach, where the fine and delicate sand, the attention to the environment and the controlled bathing waters have allowed the city to be awarded the Blue Flag. In fact, Senigallia's velvet beach can be easily reached by bicycle path and is ideal not only for having fun with the family and being a child again, but also for long and relaxing walks.

La Fenice Theatre and Archaeological Area

The La Fenice Theatre in Senigallia was recently rebuilt on the same site as the city's previous theatres, with architectural elements that recall more or less ancient styles. It is a structure that hosts opera, ballet, concerts, prose and cinema performances from year to year, season to season. One of the treasures to be admired, however, is just below the theatre itself: the La Fenice archaeological area discovered during the theatre's renovation, dating back to the first centuries AD, where it is possible to admire both the remains of buildings of Roman origin and the finds discovered on site.

Rocca Roveresca

Commissioned by Giovanni Della Rovere, lord of Senigallia, it was built by the best architects of the late 15th century, on the site of the first fortifications from the Roman era and the centuries preceding the Della Rovere. Not only a fortress but also a stately home, it was an artillery school for the Della Rovere family, as well as a papal prison and an orphanage. It has travelled through the centuries remaining a landmark within the historic centre, and hosts art exhibitions and prestigious cultural events.

Rotunda by the sea

Founded in the Belle Époque as a wooden bathing platform, the Rotonda has undergone many modifications, demolitions and reconstructions throughout history, but always maintains a strong link with the sea on which it seems to float as if suspended. It was in the 1950s and 1960s that the Rotonda reached its greatest glory, thanks to the performances of Italian pop stars. It was not only a bathing site, but also a place of entertainment, which is preserved in the memory of the locals as a place of meeting, art and culture.

Historical centre

As well as being a place to meet and have fun, with bars, shops and a host of activities, the historic centre of Senigallia is a treasure trove full of attractions. There are the Portici Ercolani, 126 arches in Istrian stone that run along the Misa river, where the weekly market is now held, and also the Foro Annonario, a square with an arcade and columns, a symbol of the city and a stage for many events, as well as being home to the Antonelliana library.

Festivals and events

One of the best known events in the city of Senigallia is the Summer Jamboree, an international event that every year takes the city back to 1940-50s America, with concerts, parties, swing and dancing on the beach to the rhythm of the wildest rock'n'roll. There are many other appealing events, from the Bacajà! theatre festival, with shows and workshops with artists from all over the world, to the Filanda Festival, an opera recital held in the old silk spinning mill, Pane nostrum, with an international festival dedicated to this food, or the Ventimilarighesottoimari mystery festival, which transforms the velvet beach into the "capital of mystery literature".
